Silient points of the meetings:
- We are planning a working meeting on December 14-17, 2024, in Egypt, hosted by Prof. Shaaban Khalil, to:
- review each chapter and make suggestions for improvements.
- decide which chapters are not matured enough and should be permanently dropped from teh report.
- at least one convener per working group should attend in person.
- we are seeking travel coverage for the invited conveners. The invitation will be based on the level of convener contribution to the chapters in the report and lack of convener travel coverage. Some people can secure travel coverage from their institutes and we appreciate that. We will make a list of the invited conveners. The conveners that will receive travel coverage will be communicated to UNESCO who is providing partial travel support.
- Final report symposium
- The chapters retained during the meeting in December will be improved further and included in the final report, but some chapters may still be dropped later if the concerned conveners stop reponding to comments timely.
- The final symposium is planned for September 22-25, 2025, in Togo, in connection with the 4th African Conference of Fundamental and Applied Physics, ACP2025, planned in Togo on September 14-20, 2025.
- Funding support
- UNESCO will provide travel coverage for some of selected conveners in item 1) and we need to send to UNESCO the list of these conveners very soon. However, we need an extra funds to cover all the expenses of the meeting in December. We are therefore still seeking funding.
- Some participants will be covered through their own institutes.
- We are also seeking funding for the symposium.
- Other information
- We need to get back to Prof. Khalil about the number of expected in-person particpants at the December meeting.
- Prof. Luca Serafini has joined the ASFAP Advisory Committee. He has read the chapters of Accelerartors and Light Sources. He will send comments to improve these chapters. He will attend the working meeting in December.
- Prof. Young-Kee Kim of the ASFAP Advisory Committee has expressed interest in attending the working meeting in December.
- UNESCO will send an observer to the working meeting in December.
- The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has expressed interest in supporting the ASFAP report and is invited to the meeting in December. We have extended an invitation to the AAS President to join the ASFAP Advisory Committee.
- UNESCO will provide coverage for copy editting, formatting and distribution of the final report to its member states, with a recommendation for consideration in strategic engagements in physics education and research in Africa.
