Within the framework of the conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of CERN, the Rector of the
Georgian Technical University, Academician Davit Gurgenidze met with the President of the Council
of one of the largest scientific centers in the world - the European Organization for Nuclear Research
(CERN), Professor Costas Fontas, and a delegation of CERN scientists. The meeting was an extended
format, in which prominent CERN scientists participated - Andrzej Kharkievitch, Deputy Resource
Manager of the CMS Collaboration; David Barney, CMS/HGCal Coordinator; Salvatore Buontempo,
Head of the CMS/RPC Subdetector; Luciano Musa, Coordinator of the CERN 70th Anniversary
Events, Head of the Non-Member States Committee; Tiziano Camporesi, CMS Leader; Chiara
Mariotti, CMS Lead Scientist; CMS Resource Coordinator Kirsty Aspola; Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi
State University Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia; Satoshi Mihara, a Japanese scientist on a
working visit to GTU, manager of one of the world's largest COMET experiments at the Japanese
Proton Accelerator Research Complex J-PARC, under the auspices of the Japan High Energy
Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), and advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Education,
Science, Culture and Sports.
The event, which was opened by Rector Academician David Gurgenidze, was attended by
representatives of the GTU administration, the Director of the GTU Institute of Quantum Physics and
Engineering Technologies, the official representative of Georgia, as well as the leader of the
university's group of scientists at CERN - Zviad Tsamalaidze, the scientific and academic circles of
the university, students and invited Georgian scientists. The gathered audience was welcomed by TSU
Rector, Academician Jaba Samushia, and ATLAS National Contact Person Irakli Minashvili.
The conference is made even more remarkable by the two new Memoranda of Understanding recently signed with CERN, which are a significant achievement for the development of our Georgian science and the progress of the country.
