JUAS 2025 RF Engineering
Links and download links to software tools,
used or recommended during our sessions
1. Falstad circuit simulator Java applet:
https://www.falstad.com/circuit/
This tool will be mentioned briefly during the introduction of the Smith chart lecture on Thursday, 20th Feb, 9:00 am. Please feel free to test and exercise this online Java applet, using the two text schematic input files located at the JUAS InDiCo site for that session:
IdealTL_DCswitched_Z050-RL.txt
IdealTL_pulsed_Z050-RL.txt
The use and test of this Falstad software is completely optional and is for demonstration only.
You can also try to install the code on your computer, but it is not necessary.
2. Smith-Chart software from Fritz Dellsperger:
https://www.fritz.dellsperger.net/smith.html
https://cernbox.cern.ch/s/mmvRrQhj0LdqAJG
This software tool be briefly introduced following the Smith chart lecture on Thursday, 20th Feb, in the morning. The software runs only on Windows PCs, sorry. The software is a free demo version, which is sufficient for our purpose. On the JUAS IndiCo site I will add a little home exercise, to be worked out with the Dellsperger Smith software.
3. The QucsStudio circuit simulator software:
https://cernbox.cern.ch/s/mmvRrQhj0LdqAJG
It time permits we may have little demo using the QucsStudio software, probably before or after the Pillbox Resonator II lecture on Friday, 21st Feb, 11:00 am. QucsStudio is a more up-to-date version of Qucs, also this software unfortunately runs only on Windows. You just need to unzip the downloaded file, nothing to be installed, but you may opt to make a Desktop link to “start.bat”. I will upload the related example Qucs schematic file(s) to the JUAS InDiCo site, so you can repeat the demo later at home.
4. CST Studio Suite 2025, electromagnetic modelling software:
https://cernbox.cern.ch/s/mmvRrQhj0LdqAJG
This educational version of the commercial software will be used during the 3D numerical analysis demonstration by Michela on Friday, 21st Feb, 10:00 am. Again, Windows only. Please make sure to be connected to the CERN WiFi network. Please open the license settings and select:
- Point to an existing Flexnet-based CST Studio Suite license server system
- Server: licencstacad , Port: 1705
Please try to install the software BEFORE the “Software installation” session of the 19th February at 16h15. Download and installation of the CST Studio software may take up to 1 hour!
Please note, in previous years we used the Student version of Ansys HFSS 3D, as described in the JUAS book, however, we think CST Studio is more intuitive and better adapted for our lecture. Still, feel free to exercise with other EM software like HFSS, which is free available as part of the Ansys Electronics Desktop – Free version at:
