The level of radiation expected from the collisions at Interaction Point 8, particularly the flux of hadrons with energy in the multi-MeV range, is sufficient to induce Single Event Errors (SEEs) in the standard electronics present in many of the control systems located in UL84. Such events could disrupt the LHC's operation, potentially leading to critical situations for machine components.
Although some of the equipment was relocated to the nearby ULs galleries—where radiation levels are lower—during the 2024 physics campaign, suspected Single Event Upsets (SEUs) have still been observed in industrial electronics associated with the active magnetic bearings.
To mitigate radiation-induced effects, it is proposed to utilize the YETS 2024/2025 and LS3 periods to relocate the LHC cryogenic system, thereby improving its radiation immunity.
