TRAIN

Bristol has two train stations, make sure to choose Bristol Temple Meads as your destination (Bristol Parkway is further out of town). To get from Bristol Temple Meads to the lab the options are:

  • half an hour walk through the city centre, very nice but includes a fairly steep hill
  • buses can be paid with contactless (tap-on, tap-off)
    • direct bus is the 72 which stops directly outside Physics (Tyndall Avenue) but only runs about once per hour
    • bus 8 to Park Street (top), then a short walk
    • bus 73 or 74 to The Centre, or A1 to the Bristol Coach Station, then 15 minute (uphill) walk
  • electric scooter or bike from TIER
  • Otherwise it’s a short taxi ride (there is a taxi rank directly outside the main entrance to Temple Meads, or use UBER etc.)

NOTE: advance rail fares should be available from the beginning of May - please book if at all practical.

AIRPORT

Bristol has its own airport (BRS) with direct flights from Geneva.

There are two main options for getting into town from Bristol airport:

  • Bristol Flyer (airport bus) which picks up and drops off at the Bristol Coach station. The bus leaves every 10-15 minutes.
  • Taxi (about 25-30 minutes in normal traffic). Arrowcars is the main airport taxi company.  Uber can also pick up from the airport.

Other nearby airports include:

  • Birmingham - good train connections to Bristol during the day, but evening flights may not be an option as the trains don’t run very late; check before you book your flight

  • Southampton or Cardiff – please note the train connections are limited

  • London Heathrow has very good coaches to Bristol via National Express, MegaBusand Flixbus (about 2 hours travel time); there’s also a good train connection, but the buses are often more convenient and generally much cheaper

  • Gatwick - the train and bus journeys are not so easy but can be done if needed

PARKING

Visitor parking spaces are very limited, but sometimes available for a charge of £7 per day.  The parking is located approximately two minutes’ walk from the Physics building.  All enquiries must be made well in advance as spaces are very limited - email particle-physics@bristol.ac.uk

The nearest public car park is Trenchard Street which costs £18 for a full day.
