Accommodation and living costs

As a CERN openlab Summer Student, you will be staying either at Séjours & Affaires in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, France, or at the CERN Hostel on the Meyrin site, Switzerland. Below, you will find details about both options.

Séjours & Affaires-France

A comfortable residence located just across the border in Saint-Genis-Pouilly, France, offering fully furnished apartments with shared facilities and easy access to CERN via public transport or bike. 

Hotel facilities:

  • Green area
  • Fitness room
  • Balcony in each apartment 
  • Parking (also for bikes)
  • Washing and dryer machines (5€ per use)
  • Vacuum cleaner and other cleaning equipment (available at the reception)
  • Grocery store in 5 min walk
  • Sports stadium in 3 min walk
  • Bus stop in 1 min walk

At the end of your stay, a cleaning fee will be added to your last invoice

Sejours et Affaires in Saint-Genis-Pouilly

CERN Hostel-Switzerland

Located on the CERN Meyrin site, the CERN Hostel provides simple and functional accommodation for visitors. It offers single rooms with basic amenities, including shared kitchens and bathrooms in the corridors.

Hotel facilities:

  • Single rooms with different levels of amenities
  • Laundry room
  • Shared kitchen (corridor-based)
  • Shared shower and bathrooms (corridor-based)

Check-in/check-out policy

Check-in time is 14:00. If you arrive outside the opening hours of the Reception, room keys can be obtained from the security guard on duty at the entrance to CERN's Meyrin site - Gate B (building 120).

Check-out time is 12:00.

Booking Rules

Reservation can be done for a period starting at the earliest 3 days before the contract starts and at the latest 3 days after the contract ends, if we can not offer you the same type of room for the whole stay, you might need to change room during your stay

Modification and cancellation delay

No cancellation/ modification charge applies if it occurs 6 days before the foreseen day of arrival (CET). Beyond that time the first night will be charged. In case of not showing up the first night will be charged, and the rest of the stay will be canceled if no (re)confirmation is given before noon (CET) the day following the no-show. 

In case of early departure, no charges apply if announced to the hotel reception 7 days before the new departure day, beyond that time one night will be charged. During the stay, room moves will be charged 20.00 CHF

Booking, modification, and cancellation procedure

Reservation requests will only be accepted with this form filled in and sent to the hostel reception (housing.service@cern.ch). Please include. You can cancel or modify your reservation by sending an email to the same email address. Please also include the "Summer Student openlab programme" as well as your name. 

Payment procedure

Debit/credit cards are accepted. Cash payment can only be made in Swiss Francs at the CERN Hotel. A payment of CHF 500.00 will be requested within the first two weeks of the stay, once the students have received their subsistence. During the stay, payment must be done regularly so that the open balance does not exceed CHF 500.00

Conditions of access to CERN

All persons entering the CERN site must be in possession of a CERN access card issued by CERN certifying that they are authorized to do so. Access cards are issued by the Reception Registration Service and Access Control Service in Building 33 or Building 55 respectively. If the arrival is scheduled on a weekend, access to CERN site will be granted thanks to the list (which mentions student's names) sent to the security guards on duty (CERN Meyrin site- Gate B- Swiss side)

 

CERN Hostel room

Living costs in the area

As a CERN openlab Summer Student, you will receive a daily subsistence allowance of 92 CHF, which is intended to cover housing, meals, and local transportation. A typical meal at the CERN restaurant costs between 9–15 CHF. (As of March 2025, 1 CHF ≈ 1.06 EUR.)

If you are staying in Saint-Genis-Pouilly (France), you will have access to local grocery stores, sports facilities, and other amenities within walking distance. Food prices in France are generally lower than in Switzerland, making grocery shopping and cooking a more cost-effective option. The shared kitchens in Séjours & Affaires accommodate 2–4 people, allowing for easier meal preparation. For transport, CERN provides bicycles that students can use during their stay.

If you are staying at the CERN Hostel (Switzerland), you will be located on-site, offering the shortest commute to work. Shared kitchen facilities at the hostel are corridor-based and may be used by 20–30 people. The nearest city amenities like groceries, pharmacies, and sports areas are located in Saint-Genis-Pouilly or Meyrin, which can be reached by bus or bicycle. 

During weekends, many students take the opportunity to explore European cities or visit the mountains and Lake Geneva, enjoying the region’s natural beauty.
