News from the PS & SPS Physics Coordinator

M.R. Jäkel, P. Martinengo

Proton Run 2025

  • Physics Start p+ EA & nTOF Wednesday 19.03.2025
  • Physics start Isolde Friday 28.03.2025
  • SPS NA Physics start EHN1 Monday 14.4.2025
  • SPS NA Other Physics start Thursday 17.4.2025

Proposal : First User Meeting 13.3.2025

Reminder: Beam time exceeding the limits of 2 weeks PS beam time and 1 week SPS beam time per year need the approval of one of these CERN committees: SPSC, LHCC, DRDC, INTC, RB or IEFC. Consider joining a DRD collaboration, if you require more beam time.

Target intensities:
See below or via ASM (accessible from within the CERN network).

Dedicated SPS MDs - if not anounced differently - are taking place from 8:00 to 18:00

PS Machine Report (A. Huschauer, D. Cotte)

  • Beam commissioning started on 4 March 2025
  • During the first days especially RF setup and accesses for F61 vacuum chamber investigations and removals, and L4 source intervention
  • Commissioning well advanced by now
    • EAST beam setup well advanced and all 3 variants available
      • beam commissioning ongoing in the secondary lines
    • TOF beams ready, first beam to target planned tomorrow 18:00
      • work ongoing to push parasitic bunch intensities on EAST cycles
    • beam to SPS tomorrow morning 7am: LHCPILOT and MTE core only for aperture measurements
    • LHC multi-bunch setup ongoing
    • first AD beam setup last night at low intensity

Safety (J. Devine)

We are already receiving safety clearances, thank you.
Here is the link for ISIEC submission: https://ep-th-safety.web.cern.ch/isiec-safety-clearance
Remember, you will need to visit the link twice, the first time to log in and then when you go back to the link a second time you will see the form to submit.
As in previous years, we will be reserving a slot on Wednesday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm for clearances in EHN1, please try to fit your request inside this period. Of course, if you need an inspection at another time mark it down in your ISIEC form and we will do our best to find a mutually convienient time. Safety clearance inspections can only be performed during working hours.

n_ToF (Alice Manna and Paolo M Milazzo)

Ready to start!
Beam for physics on 19.03

EAR1: Silicon Annular detector and GEMpix detector test for (n, cp) reactions
EAR2: Gas chamber for fission fragments studies
NEAR: Activation with sample cycling

East Area Beam Status (D. Banerjee, L. Nevay, M. van Dijk, B. Rae)

On call number during physics: 67500

Beam aligned nicely on T09 and T10/T11 targets from PS-OP. An angle is seen in the T09 secondary line in the horizontal which is likely coming from the primary beam. Further investigation to be done today to correct it.

T09: Commissioning progressing well.
T10: Commissioning going well. Mirrors were upgraded in the XCETs (threshold Cherenkov detectors) and new cables were installed in the YETS. So, the timing of signals is being checked in collaboration with SY-BI.
T11: Commissioning going well. Should complete this week.

East Area Users Tour de Table

T8 Incoming Main: IRRAD/CHARM (F. Ravotti)

Facility ready for beam. Beam commissioning started. First beam propagated down T8 yesterday evening by BE-OP. From next week, we will start IRRAD/CHARM calibration week aiming to start user experiments on Wed. March 26th.

T9 Incoming Main: WCTE (Mark Hartz, Lauren Anthony)

  • Two components to WCTE - 4m cylindrical water Cherenkov detector, and upstream beam monitors

  • We have been operating the WCTE detector for approximately 2 weeks, with up to 81 mPMTs fully functional.

  • The beam monitors, including ACTs, TOFs, Hodoscope etc were installed in T09 between 07.01 and 10.03

  • We are receiving beam during beam tuning and calibrating our beam monitors before the physics run begins.

  • We see spikes in the rate in our detector during periods when the beam stopper is in and other beam lines are operating (below). Should we expect eleveated neutron or muon rates? Any advice on what may be the cause is welcome.

T10 Incoming Main: BI STRAW (Robert Garbrecht Larsen)

  • Small straw experiment to benchmark new 5mm diameter straws for possible future use in a beam profile monitor.
  • Will scan intensity, energy and high voltage applied to straw.

North Area Beam Status

Please be careful around the beamline and spectrometer magnets. They might be powered as tests are on-going and hardware commissioning and polarity checks are starting soon.

North Area Users Tour de Table

H8 DUMP No beam: STRAW TRACKER RD (Please Put Your Name Here)
