- North Area Slow-eXtraction (SX) test bench upstream of T6 target to be used for HI-ECN3 tests in 2025/2026
- 2025 test:
- Test will allow to replicate peak conditions of temperatures and stresses of final target
- Two identical W Targets with static He (atm pressure) and water-cooled outer target container
- Beam conditions: 1.5-4.5e12 p/spill, 1 s spill, 5-10 min rep. rate, 7.5-45e13 POT, 3 MDs (July, August, September)
- The target core material will be of W with partly Ta cladding/foils. Last block will be made from Al for filling the buffer space
- Pulse temperature (400 degrees in pulse; 1 target even at ~800 degrees)
- Removal of target with overhead crane during YETS25/26 and possible opening in b867 or b953
- Both targets have their separate He system, each closed by a pinch
- Installation plans
- Plan to install targets during Technical Stop on 24 June
- In view of high residual dose rates for re/deinstallation of crane cameras (~250 uSv/h after 8 h cool-down) and approx. 2 hours of work at given position, a min. cool-down time of at 24 hours can be expected. Need to refine the dose estimate with a WDP and check of min. number of cameras to be installed. To be checked also with BE-OP what cool-down low intensity test on 23/06 means for the NA. - In view of potential delays for the W blocks, backup installation dates to be investigated. However, no other TS.
- Currently no PMI at SX test bench, but PMI close to T4 could probably be moved. Action/Yann to check for potentially moving this week, while ensuring with Damien that future access is not blocked
- RP studies:
- CATIA model, technical drawings and material information (density, elemental compositions) to be put on shared CERNBOX folder. Action/Rui
- Existing FLUKA model to be updated (geometry, materials, scoring). Action/Giorgio+Olin
- Estimate residual dose rates of targets for worst case irradiation in “fresh” environment (also no water) and evaluate radionuclide inventory of target core materials, He and target holder in contact with the He. Action/Giorgio+Olin
- Check if He can easily be collected. Action/Rui
- Investigate a H-3 measurement setup. Action/Fabrice
- Concrete blocks not needed on top of the test stand (also for 2026 test)
- A next meeting will be scheduled soon, however any relevant news (e.g. on PMI) to be shared already before via email
- Another meeting will be planned with Francesco for the 2026 test setup
