Travel:
The city of San Sebastián has good rail, road, air and sea communications. It is one of the best known cities in Spain and the Basque Country, a must-see destination!
The main airports, connected by bus, are:
- Bilbao Airport (BIO) (map): It has connections all over Europe, the United States (Newark on United), and Northern Africa. About 100 kilometres from San Sebastián.
- San Sebastián Airport (EAS) (map): 20 kilometres from the city centre, with connections to Madrid and Barcelona.
-
Biarritz Airport (BIQ) (map): International airport, 47 km from the city.
Furthermore, the airport of Vitoria-Gasteiz (VIT) (map) is served by Ryanair from selected European cities. Less favourable options are the airports of Santander (SDR) (map) especially for low-cost carriers, which is a two-hour bus ride away (with a potential change in Bilbao), and Bordeaux (BOD) (map) with many international connections but a longer transfer to San Sebastián.
Among these options, flying to Bilbao Airport is the most convenient, offering the largest number of flight connections while remaining close to San Sebastián. Indeed, direct (Pesa/Lurralde) buses leave from the airport to San Sebastián every 30' (at the quarter or three-quarters of the hour). The ride lasts about 80'. Tickets can be bought online or directly at the airport from the vending machines (once you left the baggage claim area, turn to the right and walk all the way to the end of the hall. Tickets for San Sebastián are available at the machines to the left, closest to the exit doors).
From Bilbao Airport, there is also a direct bus to Bilbao Intermodal Station (tickets can be bought again close to the exit door, but at the counter), from where buses will bring you to San Sebastián (for the tickets visit https://www.alsa.es/ or https://www.pesa.net/pesa/en/horarios). The two cities are also connected by a scenic train ride (though take your time!). It is also possible to use a taxi, though this is on the order of 180-200€ (check price beforehand!).
The San Sebastián airport is actually located in Fuenterrabía (Hondarribía) at the border to France. It's a 20-30 minute ride, either by bus (2-3€ "On weekdays, the bus runs every 35 to 50 minutes. On weekends, the bus runs hourly between 07:05 and 20:05 and then at 20:35 and 21:45.") or by shuttle or taxi (order of 50€).
Last but not least, San Sebastián is connected also by train both from Madrid and Barcelona, but also as an option from Paris (going by TGV to Hendaye at the French-Spanish border and transferring to San Sebastián.
Within the city, you can easily move around (if not on foot) using the Dbus.
All participants will have unlimited free bus tickets within the city (Dbus) during the workshop (September 1-5), just by showing the conference badge to the bus driver.
For people arriving at the San Sebastián bus terminal, bus lines 24 and 45 (bus stop at street level, unlike the bus terminal, which is underground) take you to the conference area (Antiguo & Ibaeta) of the city. Tickets can be purchased directly on the bus, e.g., by credit card. Do not worry about the direction of the bus lines 24 and 45, they only go in one direction!
Accommodation:
The group booking and room blocking conditions at accommodation facilities in San Sebastián were found to be demanding and not particularly favorable. We kindly request that participants make their own arrangements for accommodation.
As San Sebastián is a popular destination, and September is still a busy season, it is highly recommended that you consider making your hotel reservation as early as possible.
A convenient place to stay is Hotel Distrito Oeste. The student residence Olarain is very conveniently located close to the venue and has a few publicly available rooms. There are several other hotels in the area: Hotel Antik San Sebastian, NH Collection San Sebastián Aránzazu
