Astro-particle physics with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer in space

Europe/Zurich
Description

The organisers of Beamline for Schools (BL4S; https://cern.ch/bl4s) are glad to meet the teams interested in participating in the competition.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a space version of a state-of-the-art particle physics detector operating aboard the International Space Station since May 2011. This presentation provides an overview of its broad physics program, including precision measurements of the cosmic ray composition, the search for primordial antimatter and potential dark matter signatures within our Galaxy. We will also discuss the challenges and peculiarities associated with operating high-precision instrumentation in such a unique environment.

To facilitate the participation of people coming from different time zones, we will hold the same session two times, at 9am and at 5pm, CEST (Central European Summer Time).
