Subject: Notes - 8 May 2025 - WP8 DIMR + WDP meeting : TAN-to-TAXN activity

Dear all,

Please receive my notes from the meeting on 8 May 2025 ( https://indico.cern.ch/event/1546523/).

Don’t hesitate sending me your comments.
As well in terms of sharing some new information or on progress, please feel free to send before the next meeting.

  1. Discussing the removal of the ZDC detectors from the TANs we found some incoherence with the planning data related to TAN removals.
Angelo mentioned that he remembers some months more cooling time before removal and Maria did confirm Angelos statement showing LS3 planning from probably a later version.
Safouane stated that it’s planned that he sees Estrella or Maria that afternoon and will bring this up.
Action: Oliver contacted Estrella by mail on 14/05/ to get a feedback on the latest version of planning we should work with.

  1. We went through the different parts of contributions to the DIMR and discussed the following:
    1. Preparation of TANs removal (preconditions)

                                                              i.      BRAN detectors removal: David Belohrad will care for the WDP (due to the loss of Stephano, he was however not able to bring by the information for the moment)
Action: Oliver will recontact David to establish an WDP.

ii.      ZDC detectors removal ATLAS+CMS: Both ZDC teams had been contacted and it was proposed to use the received dose data from last EYETS and do an estimate of this part with view to LS3.
In the meeting we agreed that this is an efficient way to proceed.
Action: Safouane confirmed having access to the data and realizing the dose estimate for LS3.

iii.      TAN mini-crane removal IP5: Oliver and Safouane had a meeting with CMS ZDC team. Laza did a work analysis and an estimate of time and shared his presentation.
Action: Safouane confirmed to establish a work dose estimation based on the available information.

iv.      Survey equipment to be removed from the TANs: Oliver talked to Jean-Frederick Fuchs, who stated that targets and supports become waste and GM did not foresee an intervention.
In order to reduce the number of different services to be included Oliver proposed to ask the ZDC teams to remove the survey target supports during their intervention.
This should not add more than 10 minutes to their interventions BE-GM would be happy if the supports and targets remain on the TANs.
We agreed that this is an efficient way to do.
Action: Oliver sends pictures to the ZDC teams and asks if the removal of survey pillars could be taken over by them.

    1. Disconnection of the TAN, removal and logistic to intermediate storage in UX65

                                                              i.      TE-VSC intervention on insulation jackets and TAN disconnection (chamber + bakeout cabling):
Oliver informed that TE-VSC has an own DIMR covering all LSS1 and LSS5 LS3 activities.
It was agreed that the TE-VSC DIMR will cover that part no dose estimation will be added to the TAN activity.

ii.      TAN removal – transport logistics: Maria shared a presentation and step-by-step Excel file (attached to Indico 1546523)
We shared information about TANs logistics. TANs will all arrive in UX65. IP5 TANs will arrive through the tunnel.
IP1 TANs will be brought to surface (either PM15 or PX25 still in discussion) then through surface transport to SX5, then UX65.
We agreed having enough information to be able to establish a preliminary work dose estimation.
Action: Safouane confirmed to pick up the realization of the dose estimation.

    1. TAN disassembly, modification and TAXN assembly (TDE bunker - SX6)

Oliver reminded the preliminary procedure and reconfiguration in the TDE bunker.
He shared his point of view that when getting to ALARA3 one advice of the committee would be to try to go for longer cooling times and to realize tasks accumulating high doses at a later moment.
Oliver commented, that he contacted SY-STI (Damien Grenier), if a later use of the TDE bunker compartment could be suitable for their planning.
This would allow to go for the alternative options:

        1. Store the TANs in UX65 to let them cool down – realize the TAN-to-TAXN conversion at a late moment in LS3 (this requires a use window of the TDE bunker compartment of 3 months between July and October 2029)
        2. Realize only the disassembly part of the TAN-to-TAXN conversion as planned between in first half of 2027 in the TDE bunker, store the U-shielding for cooldown in UX65, finalize completion of TAXN between July and October 2029,
this eventually can be done in UX65 if TDE bunker compartment would not be available).

We agreed that these options are very good alternatives that have the potential to reduce work doses to a good amount.
Actions: Oliver picks contact with SY-STI for checking if other time windows for the TDE bunker are possible,
Maria checks if U-shielding modification (drilling) and assembly works of the TAXN could be integrated into UX65 space allocation and logistics planning.

Oliver
