Present: Gunn, Dominique, Ivan, Darshana, Richard, James

Discussion:

  • Gunn shows a few slides with BGI locations and magnet, power converter info
  • Richard shows schematic of existing WIC (PLC based slow response) with its connection to the BIS (Beam Interlock System).
  • All WIC systems deployed in the LHC have an additional Fast Boolean processor (in parallel to the PLC) to be able to request a beam dump to the BIS, within a few microseconds, in case of an internal fault on a power converter.
  • BLMs (Beam Loss Monitor) have a direct connection to the BIS.
  • The existing WIC cables for old-BGI magnets will be recycled for the MDX trim magnets.
  • To-Do: The 4 new instrument magnets will need 8 new cables for the WIC - DIC request will be submitted by R. Mompo (DONE: RQF3369938)
  • Budget code to use for DIC: 64014
  • Functional positions can be found in the DIC request (SNOW ticket) for the DC cables is: RQF2586205
  • To-Do: SY-BI to check the BLM location/position for monitoring losses due to possible BGI magnet failiure. (DONE, see update below)
  • Dominique points out the possible magnet failiure scenario (internal short in the magnet) which might not be detected by WIC, but can have beam deflection due to loss of turns (less B field). This can be detected by magnet resistance change (drop in the voltage of magnet power converter).
  • In conclusion, there will be nothing non-standard in terms of WIC and machine protection.
