Description
Currently, part of the high-eta region of the forward RPC muon system for the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC remains un-instrumented. An international collaboration GEMs for CMS, has been intensively studying the feasibility of covering the 1.6 < |eta| < 2.4 region of the muon endcaps with large-area triple-GEM detectors. Given their good spatial resolution, high rate capability, and radiation hardness, these micropattern gas detectors are an attractive option for simultaneously enhancing muon tracking and triggering capabilities in a future upgrade of the CMS detector. An overview and status of this feasibility study will be presented. The design, construction and performance of small and full-size trapezoidal triple-GEM prototypes, using different assembly techniques, will be described. Results from simulations, measurements with x-rays and from test beam campaigns at the CERN SPS will be discussed. Preliminary studies on the expected improvements in muon reconstruction and trigger performances of this proposed upgraded forward muon system will be demonstrated.
