Description

The COmpact DEtector for EXotics at LHCb (CODEX-b) is a proposed detector dedicated to searches for displaced decays of long-lived particles (LLPs) motivated by dark-sector scenarios beyond the Standard Model. The detector is designed as a 10 × 10 × 10 m³ cube of Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) triplet units with two internal sections, to be installed near the LHCb interaction point. Its design enables integration with the LHCb readout system, allowing LLP candidates reconstructed in CODEX-b to be associated with information from the main LHCb detector. The CODEX-β detector, a 2 × 2 × 2 m³ RPC-based detector was developed to validate the detector concept, characterize the expected background environment, and study the operational integration of such a system within LHCb. The demonstrator was successfully installed and started taking data during the latest 2026 LHC data-taking period. This contribution presents the final hardware installation and commissioning status of the demonstrator detector. CODEX-β consists of a cubic structure instrumented with 14 RPC-based triplet detector faces of 2 × 1 m², located behind a 3 m thick concrete shielding wall to suppress backgrounds originating from the interaction point. The installation includes dedicated gas system design, as well as high- and low-voltage services and data acquisition (DAQ) systems, all integrated into the experiment control system for detector operation and monitoring. The DAQ architecture is based on a Data Collection and Transmission (DCT) system that processes detector data and interfaces with the LHCb trigger framework. The successful integration and commissioning of these services enabled stable detector operation and the start of CODEX-β data taking in 2026.
