Ukraine’s declaration of independence in 1991 made it possible for Ukrainian researchers and cultural figures to conduct their own investigations and to reconsider the history of Ukraine and Ukrainians, despite the powerful influence inherited from previous regimes.
The authorities of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union systematically provided a policy aimed at eroding the local intellectual and cultural space and appropriating all achievements. These achievements and contributions were then promoted under the label of “Russian”.
My report will focus on identifying possible ways to rethink the history of Ukrainian physical science and its contribution to global science. Among the popular approaches are Decolonial Studies and the New Imperial Studies.
My presentation will highlight on the case of the Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, which is one of the largest physical research centers in Ukraine. The foundation of the study consists of oral histories of the Institute’s employees.
