Description

Abstract:

"The computation of electromagnetic wake fields and their impact on accelerator performance is a longstanding challenge in accelerator physics. These wake fields, generated by the interaction between a charged particle beam and its surrounding, can significantly affect beam stability and lead to undesired power deposition in accelerator components. The accurate characterization of these effects is therefore essential for predicting and mitigating performance limitations.

In alignment with CERN’s Open Science initiative, this seminar introduces Wakis, an open-source 3D electromagnetic time-domain solver specifically designed for computing wake potentials and beam-coupling impedances in arbitrary geometries. Its Python implementation, optimized for CUDA-enabled GPUs, will be presented together with application examples and validation benchmarks against established commercial codes. The code is fully documented and openly available on GitHub, where it appears to attract an increasingly active users’ community.

By fostering a collaborative framework, Wakis aims to address emerging impedance challenges in present and future accelerators, powered by the extendability and transparency of open-source development."
