Vacuum equipment mounting for BTV design AWAKE 150 MeV line
Vacuum equipment for BTV design at AWAKE meeting – notes
Date: Tuesday 11 November 2025, 10.30 a.m. GVA time
Attendees: Ben Moser, Candy Capelli, Collette Pakuza, Eleonora Belli, Maria Carmen Giordano, Michele Bergamaschi, Nicolas Chritin, Stephane Burger
Goal: decide whether to keep BTV and vacuum equipment together or separate.
BI prefer to keep separate so that the equipment is independent, and for technical issue of the weight and having an unbalanced device (since new BTV design is much smaller than the existing linear BTVs). For vacuum, there is no other option but to have vacuum equipment on the BTV as there is no space along the 150 MeV beamline.
As a compromise, it is agreed to keep a port on the new BTV design for vacuum equipment with the preference being that it is the DN63 flange. Therefore, for BTV design at present, we foresee a cross with actuator mounted vertically above and 2xDN63 ports on either side horizontally for vacuum equipment and light extraction to camera (symmetric flange so that we can choose which side to have the vacuum equipment and the camera on).
Action -> Maria Carmen will check if DN63 is acceptable in terms of pumping speed.
Action -> Eleonora to confirm level of vacuum needed.
18 MeV line has the option of keeping the pumping equipment separate. If we go for this option, then question from Nicolas is can the vacuum pump and BTV positions be swapped at the gun.
Action -> Collette to check with Steffen if this works for him.
At the moment we foresee in total across both electron lines: 3x40 mm new BTVs and 1x60mm new BTV
Action -> Eleonora to confirm if 60 mm BTV is needed or not. Ideally swap the position of this BTV with the turbo pump (making the BTV 40 mm aperture instead of 60 mm).
