Review of magnet heat-load estimates for AWAKE Run 2c.

Constraints and limitations:

  • The 18 MeV and 150 MeV electron beamline magnets cannot be operated in pulsed mode due to their design; they must run in DC.
  • The spectrometer magnets (3× QNL, 1× VB2) must also operate in DC for physics requirements. Their maximum current is limited to 540 A (dipole) and 200 A (quads), due to power-converter and/or magnet design constraints.

Additional points:

  • Compared with the proton beamline consumption (~2.2 MW), the power consumption of the 18 and 150 MeV electron beamline magnets is negligible.
  • The primary cooling-water consumers are the proton beamline magnets. Their consumption is expected to remain the same between Run 1–2b and Run 2c, and the required infrastructure in TT41 should already be in place.
    • Operational magnet currents from previous runs could be reviewed and reused for estimates. However, given that the infrastructure is assumed to be unchanged, reducing these currents may not make sense?

Measures to reduce cooling power required in TCC4:

  • Limit the current in the spectrometer magnets to the values above. Action: Vittorio to update the numbers.
  • Remove the current spectrometer magnets (to be decommissioned) from the estimate. Action: Vittorio.
  • Update the locations where cooling power is actually required. Action: Eleonora to work with Fred to obtain the functional specifications.
