The path to the Electron-Ion Collider

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is a unique facility that will collide electrons with atomic nuclei or protons, serving as a precision microscope for studying quarks and gluons. This next-generation collider will be built at Brookhaven National Laboratory, becoming the sole collider in the United States within the next decade or so. By creating the first-ever tomographic 3D images of the “ocean” of gluons within protons or atomic nuclei, the EIC aims to answer how mass, spin, and nuclear structure emerge from the strong force (Quantum Chromodynamics). The EIC’s scientific case has been meticulously developed over several decades,encompassing the vision of advancing accelerator and detector technologies for future facilities. The project continues to garner substantial support from the scientific community, and its international engagement is on the rise. In alignment with the conclusion of RHIC’s operation in 2026, the EIC Project is planning to start construction in the near future.
