Summary of meeting on June 10, 2026

The meeting agenda is here. The recording is here.

Salient points:

  1. UNESCO reading and comments on the reports: We have received comments from UNESCO on the report up to chapter 18. In consultations with the chapter authors and the UNESCO readers, the comments have been addressed (up to chapter 17; the authors are working the comments about chapters 16 and 18). We thank the chapter authors for fast turnaround and availability in addressing the the comments. We will continue engaging the authors as we receive comments on the rest of the report (chapters 19-26).
  2. The grant of right form: If you are an author of the report, you may need to sign the grant of right form. If you have not already done so, please sign and submit the grant of right form, for UNESCO to publish.
  3. Implementation. While addressing comments on the report, we continue the discussion about the implementation budgets and timelines submitted by some of the chapter authors.
    1. We heard from Ulrich about the proposal for an International Centre for Experimental Physics in Africa, a school to train students in physics instrumentation and detectors.
    2. We heard from Luca on a summary of the proposal for a Compact Light Source (CLS) facility in Africa (he presented this already in a previous meeting). Luca informed us that INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Italy) and Université Mohammed Premier (Morocco) have signed an MoU towards building a CLS facility in Morocco.
    3. At our next meeting, we would like to hear about the budgets & timelines for the Quantum Strategy for Africa and Medical Waste Incineration. We kindly request the presence of the authors of these budget proposals at the next meeting to present their materials.
    4. After hearing about all the budget & timeline proposals, we shall discuss to emerge with one implementation proposal for funding agencies; it is hoped that such a proposal will integrate the essential elements of the various other proposals without inflating the budget and timeline. Therefore, if you want your proposal to be a part this, you need to show up at the next meetings, present your budget and time, and discuss toward a unified proposal.
  4. We suggest to hold the next meeting on Wednesday July 22.
