The HEP Software Foundation

The HEP Software Foundation facilitates cooperation and common efforts in High Energy Physics software and computing internationally. 
There are several focus activity areas: Data analysis, detector simulation, physics generators, pyHEP, Julia in HEP, reconstruction and software triggers, software developer tools and packaging, and training.
The HSF hosts workshops, provides strategic input and generally raises awareness on the importance of HEP software.

      Sustainability and software engineering are often treated as separate concerns. One often focuses on energy, carbon, and environmental limits. The other focuses on code, systems, longevity, reproducibility, and delivery.
      This talk suggests the link runs deeper. Both fields face similar pressures. Demand rises. Resources are finite. Complexity grows. Hidden costs accumulate. I draw on work in network systems, media, broadcasting, open source, mentoring, platform-scale systems, and research computing.
      Better software engineering is not merely adjacent to sustainability - I argue they are symbiotic, linked through a common concept of software entropy.
      Through concrete projects, practical examples, the session explores and suggests how to build systems that scale better and waste less.
