Physics goals and trigger challenges
by
Abstract
This introductory lecture will start with a quick overview of the some of the key goals for the LHC physics program and how these have evolved from the early LHC days to the future High Luminosity LHC, with emphasis of the general-purpose ATLAS and CMS experiments. We will then see how those goals are shaping the evolution of the trigger systems, what are the main challenges and what are the tools and techniques that we can use to tackle them.
Speaker Biography
Giovanni Petrucciani is a CERN physicist in the CMS Experiment. Throughout his PhD (2006-2008, Pisa) and post-doc (2009-2012, UC San Diego) and CERN Fellowship (2013-2016), Giovanni worked on the CMS event reconstruction, especially tracking, and on the searches and measurements of the Higgs boson. Later on, as CERN staff physicist, he moved from offline reconstruction to FPGAs, to develop algorithms and firmware for the Phase-2 Upgrade of the CMS Level-1 Trigger for HL-LHC, and was coordinator of the CMS Higgs physics analysis group.
Currently he is serving as Upgrade Coordinator and deputy system manager of the whole CMS Level-1 Trigger project, and co-task leader for the CMS R&D on Level-1 Scouting in the Next Generation Triggers project, but still enjoys writing some FPGA firmware, software, or physics analysis, when he can find the time for it.
