The course provides an introduction to quantum computing and its emerging applications to low-energy nuclear physics. It is aimed at the ISOLDE community from both theory and experiment, with no prior expertise in quantum computing required. The course introduces the basic concepts of quantum computing (qubits, gates, circuits, measurements and quantum algorithms) and connects them to nuclear many-body problems. Variational methods and the Variational Quantum Eigensolver and the encoding of nuclear Hamiltonians on quantum computers and their evaluation through measurable operators will be discussed. The course combines introductory lectures with hands-on tutorials.
The course is intended primarily for ISOLDE users and related scientists, specifically PhD students, but open to postdoctoral and senior researchers. Participants should have a general background in nuclear physics and basic quantum mechanics. No prior knowledge of quantum computing or quantum information is required.
