Background information
Launched by the European Commission in 2021, ORE was designed to provide researchers funded through EU programmes with a no-fee open access publishing venue. In its first five years, the platform published more than 1,500 articles co-authored by more than 7,800 authors from over 4,000 institutions worldwide.
ORE is now hosted and operated by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and its strategic direction is overseen collectively by a group of 17 funders (national research funding and performing organisations). The new governance and funding model transforms ORE from a platform primarily serving EU-funded researchers into a collective European publishing service.
ORE in a nutshell
Open Research Europe is a no-fee, open access publishing platform providing transparent editorial services for a wide range of research outputs.
ORE adopts a publishing model designed to support open science practices. The platform welcomes a wide variety of research outputs that are subject to rigorous publication prechecks. Then, a fully type-set copy of the work goes online, enabling immediate viewing and citation directly after submission. Peer review then happens in the open, after publication, so there is no need to wait for a review cycle to finish before others can read your work. Reach is amplified through indexation, data practices are made FAIR, and open access mandates are fulfilled. Critically neither the author nor the reader pay any fees.
