1. News from IPPOG meeting –– Dave
Half of meeting devoted to discussions
* Masterclasses: Spin-offs discussed, and moving forward. "Student analyses of LHC data well received."
* Higgs animation group: "Higgs boson does NOT give mass to ANY particle." Existing material on CERN websites and other locations should be updated to reflect this. Aside – Backgrounders need review.
* New IPPOG website: CERN support for Drupal would be welcome as the training was insufficient. Suggestion for future LOG: Dan to propose solution for long-term-support for Drupal
* Conferences: ESOF, Dublin; WCPE, Turkey; ICHEP, Melbourne. For last, masterclasses in Melbourne and Sydney. CERN DG invited to speak on importance of communicating science.
2. Passport Big Bang - Juliette
10 exhibition platforms. ATLAS and ALICE installed. Map (with smartphone version) linking all sites with bike routes. All itineraries are agreed with the communes and will be signposted by them ‘passeport big bang’. French/English. Inaugration foreseen in May 2013 (pending confirmation from the Comité technique InterReg) In addition to posters, there will be a game on each platform “mission LHC” with as a prize a collision.
Request to experiments for images – to be discussed off-line
3. Remote link-ups –– Emma
Live link to CCC (Mirko) during public presentation. Is it time for central mentions (and methods) for such link-ups? Steve: Can be overwhelming to receive many requests, but can support occasional individual requests. Rolf: Can we postpone discussion, since there will be no Control Room activity after the end of this year for a while? Agreed.
4. KTT Networks –Marina excused due to last minute Group meeting
5. LOG role and participation – discussion postponed to June meeting
6. Underground visits –– Sophie
Some comments received (from journalists); procedures need to be harmonised –– show safety procedures are the same. Journalists registered with eye-scans etc., and then got access via the MAD. Comment from Steve: Situations vary from time to time.
Suggestion: Bring GLIMOS together for briefing. Communication groups have no control. Request from Claudia: would it be possible to have feedback on media coverage resulting from underground visits.
7. Masterclasses at CERN –– Sandrine
Positive feedback – students enjoyed the day. Video conference appreciated but too long. Suggestion: CERN Press Office to contact local press in future informing that local schools are participating. Participants to be asked for feedback via a facebook page.
8. Round table:
Corrine (DG-CO): Two press releases soon: 1) Remote computing centre in Hungary. Shared T0. 2) OpenLab –– Start of a new phase
Dave (CMS): Queried why there no press release for Xi_b and requested that new thought be given to defining what qualifies for one and what doesn't. Input requested from the Press office to the experiments. Dave also noticed that in GLIDE autoratings, articles that were rated bad were actually neutral or good. Could this feedback be passed on?
Claudia (ATLAS): ATLAS 3D movie being prepared. Will be shown at next LOG meeting.
Next meeting – 7th June 10.30 – 12.00 1-1-25
