Description
We discuss the strangeness production in heavy-ion collisions at SIS-FAIR-NICA energies
and the role of doubly and triply strange baryons for testing the strangeness balance in a collision event. The minimal statistical model is applied, in which the total strangeness yield is fixed by the observed K+ multiplicity. Exact strangeness conservation in each collision event is explicitly preserved. This implies for instance that Xi baryons can be released only in events where two or more kaons are produced. The influence of in-medium effects and centrality bias on the strange particle production is analyzed. The puzzling enhancement of Xi yields is discussed and arguments in favor of the Xi production in direct reactions are given. Various mechanisms for Xi productions are reviewed.
