ICAN has, over the course of its 18 month programme, engaged in design studies for a practical laser source for high repetition rate laser wake field accelerators. The final conference at CERN on June 27/28th, 2013 will present the results of these design studies, and show that laser sources based on highly-multiplexed optical fibres can provide the high peak power, high average power, and efficiency necessary for practical laser-based accelerators. Speakers will include
  • Prof Gérard Mourou, head of the ICAN consortium, and Director of IZEST
  • Prof Toshiki Tajima, Deputy Director of IZEST and inventor of laser electron acceleration
  • Prof Sir David Payne, Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton
  • Prof. Dr. Jens Limpert, Head of Fibre and Waveguide Lasers at the Institute of Applied Physics, Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena
The designs for optical fibre based laser sources will be presented, and the applications of these new sources, which will represent a paradigm shift in the possibilities for the uses of lasers in high energy physics, will be discussed. Talks at the meeting will encompass the laser sources, and their application to laser particle acceleration, and the potential scientific and societal applications of compact, efficient particle accelerators.
