Workshop on Spinning Particles in Quantum Field Theory: Worldline Formalism, Higher Spins and Conformal Geometry
Salón Lobeira 2
Hotel Holiday Inn, San Cristóbal de las Casas, México
The workshop intends to gather expert researchers and graduate students to work on connections between geometry and quantum field theory.
Conformal geometry and worldline methods have a long history, but the methods required to fully utilize these tools have only been recently fully developed. String inspired techniques have been known for some time to provide efficient alternatives to standard Feynman diagrams, these methods can now be applied to higher spin and gravitational fields via worldline spinning particle models, while methods of conformal geometry are finding many new physical applications in both an AdS/CFT setting and in studies of massive higher spin models.
Local expenses (travel within Mexico, lodging and food) for invited participants will be covered by the organization. Scientists wishing to participate with their own funding are welcome to join, upon registration. There may be limited additional funding for those without their own sources--please contact the organizers.
All participants are invited to register by August 31.
The present workshop is dedicated to the memory of Victor Manuel Villanueva Sandoval, our friend, colleague and coorganizer, who passed away on August 31, 2013, at the age of only 43. (Here is a group photo with Victor at last year School in Morelia.)

Superconformal Mechanics: Critical Scalings and Dualities of the 1D Sigma Models 1hI review recent advances in superconformal mechanics: the existence of critical scalings (constraining the admissible Lagrangians) for the finite superconformal algebras and the existence of a new type of duality (the target-target duality) of the 1D sigma models. In the light of these results the world-line superconformal theory is put into a new perspective.Speaker: Prof. Francesco Toppan (CBPF Rio de Janeiro)

Second Order Fermions 30mIn this talk, recent advances in the second order formalism for fermions in gauge theories are studied. This framework has a direct correspondence to the Dirac formalism but allows the description of an anomalous gyromagnetic factor. Besides, due to its close resemblance of scalar theory, this model incorporates naturally fermion self-interactions. The aim of this work is to analyze the one-loop renormalization of the second order formalism for spin 1/2 fermions with arbitrary gyromagnetic factor and self-interaction couplings in QED and QCD.Speaker: Dr Carlos Alberto Vaquera (University of Colima)

Supersymmetry for Particles and Strings in Various Dimensions 1hThe canonical structure of the action for the spinning particle, the superparticle and superstring is considered. In 3+3 dimensions, a superparticle action that has manifest supersymmetry both on the world line and in the target space is given.Speaker: Prof. Gerry McKeon (University of Western Ontario)

Statistical Origin of Special and Doubly Special Relativity: Path Integral Viewpoint 1hIn this talk I will show how a Brownian motion on a short scale can originate a relativistic motion on scales that larger than particle's Compton wavelength. I start by discussing complex dynamical systems whose statistical behavior can be explained in terms of a superposition of simpler underlying dynamics ? the so-called superstatistics paradigm. Then I go on by showing that the combination of two cornerstones of contemporary physics ? namely Einstein?s special relativity and quantum-mechanical dynamics is mathematically identical (when analytically continued to Euclidean regime) to a complex dynamical system described by two interlocked processes operating at different energy scales. The combined dynamic obeys special and doubly special relativity even though neither of the two underlying dynamics does. This implies that Einstein's special relativity might well be an emergent concept in the quantum realm. To model the double-stochastic process in question, I consider quantum mechanical dynamics in a background space consisting of a number of small crystal-like domains varying in size and composition, known as polycrystalline space (or Voronoi tessellation). There, particles exhibit a Brownian motion. The observed relativistic dynamics then comes solely from a particular grain distribution in the polycrystalline space. In the cosmological context such distribution might form during the early universe?s formation. Salient issues such as Hausdorff dimensions of path-integral trajectories, connection with Feynman chessboard model and implications for quantum field theory and cosmology (leptogenesis) will be also briefly discussed.Speaker: Prof. Petr Jizba (Czech Technical University of Prague)
