The ITER project is, by far, the largest science project presently under construction. It brings together a wide group of international partners and, because of the complex nature of the in-kind sharing of the construction and project governance, poses many challenges for the project engineering. The project has been in the construction phase for 6 years. Although the site and buildings are the most visible part of the project, far more work is underway in the partners around the world, with manufacturing qualification nearing completion in all critical core components (coils, vacuum vessel, cryostat) and subcomponent manufacture (conductors, structures) well underway. I will review the status, challenges overcome and challenges still to come. Despite the advanced technology of the components, technical issues are being successfully resolved. The biggest challenge for 2014 will be controlling schedule and costs while developing a more effective and dynamic project management culture.
