WAMSDO 2008 - Workshop on Accelerator Magnet, Superconductor, Design and Optimization

First Announcement

The activity of the CARE-HHH (http://care-hhh.web.cern.ch/care-hhh/) network devoted to the advancement on Accelerator Magnet Technology (AMT) http://amt.web.cern.ch/amt/ within the Sixth European Framework Program (FP6) is approaching the end of its term. This work spanned over five years of monitoring, coordination, interaction and exchange on topics of primary interest to the community, such as:

• advances in low- and high-temperature superconducting materials (WAMS-2004);
• design and optimisation of magnets for large accelerator facilities such as the LHC at CERN and the FAIR at GSI (WAMDO-2006 and LER-2006);
• results of worldwide R&D programs on high field dipoles and quadrupoles for a LHC upgrade (WAMDO-2006);
• performance and R&D targets for fast cycled (Hz range) magnets for superconducting synchrotrons (ECOMAG-2005);
• specific technology issues such as heat deposition and quench levels, electrical insulation and impregnation techniques, heat generation and heat transfer.

It is our pleasure to announce the concluding workshop for the CARE-HHH-AMT network activities, the

CARE-HHH-AMT Workshop on
Accelerator Magnet, Superconductor, Design and Optimization
(WAMSDO)

to be held at CERN, Geneva (Switzerland), on May 19-23. The scope of WAMSDO is to review the progress of activities in the field of superconducting accelerator magnets, and especially for high field (>10 T) and Hz range cycled magnets. The main topics of the workshop are:

• summary of magnet targets and specifications for future accelerators and accelerator upgrades, and in particular for the LHC upgrade;
• advances on low- and high-temperature superconducting materials and cables, with special attention to progresses in Nb3Sn, low-loss Nb-Ti and coated conductors;
• design, optimization and supporting R&D for superconducting magnets and other devices, in particular the high field dipoles and quadrupoles for the LHC IR and fast cycled synchrotron magnets.

We plan several invited talks on the above topics that will provide a convenient frame for contributed presentations and discussion. A half-day session will be reserved to a forum dedicated to the European industries. Proposals of contributed talks are welcome.

Attendance to the workshop is by invitation only. To maintain a lively atmosphere of discussion, we wish to limit the number of participants to about 100, including speakers. Please contact the organizers to propose colleagues for participation.
