The schedule for this Journal Club on String Theory will be as follows: 1) The latest news in the world of strings Please bring papers that caught your recent attention and briefly summarize motivations, methods and results. 2) "Power Towers of String Instantons", discussion led by Iñaki García-Etxebarría Abstract: I will discuss some recent developments on multi-instantons in N=1 compactifications of string theory, with a particular focus on the developments in arXiv:0803.1562 by Blumenhagen and Schmidt-Sommerfeld. The authors argue that in some cases infinite series of corrections of the form exp(exp(exp(...))) ["power towers"] can arise for holomorphic couplings, due to multi D-instanton effects in type I. Particularly alluring is the dual heterotic interpretation of these results, where it is argued that new (still unknown) interactions between multiple worldsheet instantons are required.
