By interconnecting various devices and daily life objects, a "smarter" world is promised to us. But should I wonder how to configure my alarm clock to talk to my coffee machine? Shouldn't this interconnection of systems be smarted too?

      In autumn 2013 I took the Software as a Service free Massive Open Online Course (CS169.1x and CS169.2x in the edx.org platform) by Berkeley CS people. This course gives an overview of Software Engineering with emphasis on Agile methods. It introduces Software as a Service and Service Oriented architecture with examples based on Ruby on Rails as well as a bit of JavaScript (the good parts). The material was state of the art and the teaching was first class with lectures combined with programming assignments and quizzes with automated correction. This makes me think that MOOCs are going replace a lot of offline computing courses rather quickly...

      A new era in earth observation is about to begin. UrtheCast, a Canadian start-up company, has teamed with the Russian Space Agency to install high definition video camera on the International Space Station. Through an agreement with UNITAR-UNOSAT, near real time video will be available for early warning of natural disasters and use during emergencies. It is to be seen what effect a near real time video will have for awareness raising of current events, but the potential is high. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is video worth?

      Linux containers (LXC) is a technology that provides operating system-level virtualisation not via a virtual machine but rather by giving the processes the illusion that they are the only ones running on the guest OS. Linux namespaces and control groups (cgroups) represent the foundation on which LXC are build. Containers are fast to deploy, they introduce no overhead or indirection as in the case of traditional virtual machines and also have the added design benefit of ensuring complete isolation between processes running in separate containers. LXC are great for running multiple instances of the same service in parallel either as part of a scaling out decision or just for testing purposes. Linux containers are for deployment what Git is for development.

      Lack of computer programming experience is having a serious effect on undergraduates and within industry in Europe. Often children have very little or no experience of computer programming. The Raspberry Pi is one vehicle that can be used to encourage experimentation with computers. This talk will discuss how the Raspberry Pi can be used to stimulate learning within the Geneva area.
