Description
I will present an overview of the data analysis strategies that were deployed to discover the Higgs boson, and focus on three aspects: 1) why a statistical analysis of data is needed to formulate proof of the Higgs boson, since you can never see the Higgs itself, 2) how LHC collisions that are likely to contain Higgs bosons decays were selected, and how machine-learning (boosted decision trees) helps here, and 3) how the mathematical models that constructed the statistical evidence for the Higgs boson were built.
