The Swiss National Library, CERN and AILIS invite you to the 6th Library Science Talk 2014. Dan Mount (Civic Agenda EU, UK) will talk about "The development of the e-book market and emerging models for library e-lending". Abstract: The development and expansion of the global e-book market and associated models for library e-lending are still in an evolving state of flux and uncertainty. Publishers continue to exhibit concerns surrounding the potential erosion of long term revenue streams which are often designed-in to the pricing and licensing regimes offered to libraries or result in library access to their e-book catalogues being withheld. Many of these fears overlook the fact that in many respects piracy represents an equal threat to the ambitions of both publishers and libraries (publishers want to monetise their product and libraries want to pay to offer public access to that product). Furthermore, libraries play a key role in fostering a continued culture of reading (an essential ingredient for future publishing profits) and socialising the next generation with a culture of legitimate free access/consumption via controlled library lending (financed by library purchasing) as opposed to unlimited illegal access/consumption. This talk will review key evolving e-book market trends alongside a selection of library e-lending models which are being tested in Europe and North America About the speaker: Dan Mount is Head of Policy & Public Affairs at Civic Agenda EU, Deputy Secretary General of the UK's Digital Policy Alliance and Head of Policy at Go ON UK (the UK's leading charity for Digital Skills and Inclusion. He has previously acted as lead consultant to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on EU policy and digital inclusion in European public libraries, and served as a senior advisor/speechwriter to the Chair of the UK Parliamentary Information Technology Committee and the UK Internet Governance Forum.
