Description
The Duke University facility is the most powerful gamma-ray source ever built. The aim of the High Intensity Gamma Source (HIGS) proposal, presented in this talk, is to extend this intensity frontier at CERN by, at least, 6-7 orders of magnitude, for tunable-energy, quasi-monochromatic gamma-rays in the energy range of 1-400 MeV. Gamma-rays, in this energy domain, could be used to produce, unprecedented intensity, polarized electron, positron and muon beams for the future high energy physics projects, and neutron and radioactive beams for the nuclear physics ones. The HIGS initiative may thus open (contribute to) a broad spectrum of research domains including: the fundamental QED measurements, dark matter searches, investigation of basic symmetries of the Universe, studies of the QCD-confinement phenomena and studies of nuclear structure. It may play a crucial role in designing the future, low-cost, TeV-range, lepton collider and the future neutrino factory. Last but not the least, several industrial and medical applications of the HIGS project can also be envisaged.
