Description
The SIS18 heavy ion synchrotron will operate as an injector for the GSI FAIR
project. UHV instabilities were observed during high ion beam intensity operation
limiting the ion beam lifetime of medium charged heavy ions (e.g. U28+). An intense
upgrade of the existing UHV system was started including an experimental program on
the desorption processes and measures to improve the residual gas composition and
base pressure. The concept of the program and first results will be presented.
