Web and grid services are being promoted by IBM, Microsoft and others as a revolutionary new way to deliver applications to users. At the same time the Worldwide Web Consortium is developing the infrastructure for a new semantic web where the meaning of information is made explicit so that it can be accessed and manipulated by computers as well as human beings. This talk will look at ways in which semantic web technology is being used inside the European Union's OpenMath and MONET projects to describe what functions a mathematical web service performs and, using that information, select the most appropriate service to solve a particular problem.
