Description
Subject indexing has traditionally played a critical role in the retrieval and management of information. Over the past two decades, pragmatic and economic concerns have motivated the demand for increased automation of indexing operations. Although many new computational methods have become available, the performance and proper application of these technologies is often questioned. This talk will review the various strategies for providing subject indexing, emphasising 'computer supported' techniques. Four operational systems will be described including the NASA Machine Aided Indexing tool. Finally, some recommendations for developing (or selecting) new systems will be given.
