Description

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Collaboration, which operates and analyses data from the CMS detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, is a global organisation represented by over 4000 scientists, engineers, technicians and students working for around 200 institutions and universities from more than 40 countries. A collaboration as diverse as CMS contains a treasure trove of equally diverse sociological data. This paper presents early results from a study into the attitudes of members of the CMS Collaboration towards outreach, their motivations for participating in outreach activities and the barriers that prevent them from doing so. In particular, this paper discusses a quantitative analysis of the perceived influence of funding agencies as well as one's peers, colleagues and superiors, across variables such as age, gender, country of research affiliation, academic position and so forth.
