User Community Transition from EGEE to EGI

Europe/Paris

Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineaire (LAL)

Orsay, France
Description
Goals: This workshop is intended to bring together people in the grid user community with those planning the future European Grid Infrastructure.
  • One goal of the workshop is for users to understand how current support functions will be handled in the EGI-era and how the users and scientific communities are expected to interact with the EGI/NGI management.
  • The second goal is for those involved in EGI_DS to understand the expectations/needs of the user community and to use that information to inform their design decisions.
Getting Here: The Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineaire (LAL) is located about 25 km south of the center of Paris and is easily accessible via the RER B (Metro). The LAL website contains detailed information about how to get to LAL from the Paris airports and train stations. Accommodation: Please make reservations directly with your hotel. The list of hotels on LAL's website contains hotels in the 5th, 6th, 13th and 14th "arrondissements" as well as a few near the Orsay campus. The above neighborhoods are the most convenient for catching the RER B train to Orsay. Mailing Lists: There have been two mailing lists created for the conference: speakers and participants. You must be on the list to post to it in order to avoid spam.

        The Proposed EGI Model
The goal of this talk is to provide essential information on the envisioned User Community Services in EGI, and how the workshop participants can help in providing specific input for the transition to this model. I will provide information on the timetable for EGI, specific guidelines on how SSCs could be structured, and how user communities will be represented in EGI.org.

Supporting eScience Communities: The D4Science Perspective on EGI
The D4Science infrastructure is currently supporting two eScience communities, Environmental Monitoring and Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources Management, by providing them with Virtual Research Environments (VREs). VREs provide scientists with a dynamically aggregated environment consisting of data, services and computing and storage capabilities. D4Science builds upon the EGEE infrastructure and gLite technology to promote data generation, integration, enrichment, and curation. The objective of this talk is threefold: to emphasize the characteristics of these large communities and their needs; to present the role of the D4Science infrastructure that acts as mediator and facilitator for these communities ; to speculate on possible exploitation of the SSC model to formalize this mediator role.

The HEP communities: Grid Infrastructure/Services and Requirements
In this talk we will present the most important challenges of the four LHC experiments in terms of Grid computing. The current service and operations procedures and their evolution based on the needs of the experiments will be discussed.

Supercomputing and Grid Joint Use Case
Several domains need both massively parallel computing resources as well as cluster resources and storage due to their complex workflows. I will give an overview of how this is done today and what challenges the user communities face currently.
