Not only is beta-delayed particle emission a common decay mode in light nuclei, it also provides a powerful experimental technique to study the properties of low-lying particle-unbound states, of relevance to nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics. The power of the technique has been greatly expanded during the past two decades thanks in large part to the advent of large-area segmented silicon detectors, which has made it possible to measure multi-particle coincidences with high efficiency and high resolution. In my talk, I will discuss the technique and illustrate its potential using recent examples of beta-delayed alpha-decay studies at KVI, JYFL and ISOLDE.
