Description

Meeting between the WLCG chairpeople (except Maria A. and Pepe who are on holiday) and the experiment liaisons to define the WLCG October 2016 workshop agenda.

Agenda of the October WLCG Workshop in San Francisco https://indico.cern.ch/event/433164/

Material from the preparation of the February 2016 Lisbon workshop here

Present: Julia (chair), Alessandra (remotely connected), Andrea S., Andrea V., Maarten, Ale, Maria D. (notes).

Subject: To discuss the timetable of https://indico.cern.ch/event/433164/timetable/

SATURDAY

a. Job Efficiency (now on Saturday) with Performance (now on Sunday). Merge the 2 sessions in a longer one. Andrea V. will chair the merged session if Markus doesn't go. Total time slot will be 1.5 hours.

Markus suggested offline a split of the talks, 25' each, in job and workflow level.

Ale said and everyone agreed, the experiments are not going to present performance experienced with their own jobs. They expect the Understanding Performance (UP) team to present the techniques mutually agreed with each experiment for performance improvement. Presence of UP team members is important.

Ian asked for a report about the T0 efficiency, because its capacity is a significant fraction of the one offered by the T1s together.

b. Clouds & HPC: It should be longer, i.e. 1.5 hours. Site experience should be presented. Those (like CERN, FNAL, BNL) who think of buying Cloud resources and expose them via the standard grid interface should present how they do it. Others who offer Cloud resources via an API (not as part of the Grid) should also present this alternative. HPC is complex. It should be carefully defined because it can be either too long or vague.

c. Network: Julia will go through the content will Marian. Shawn will be the chairman. IPv6 should be included as a concrete status report. The plan is not yet approved by the MB because the MB asked the T1s to comment on the plan.

d. Accounting; Maarten said that there should be a session, even if short, because the changes are important. Julia will check with Ian again what he expects because he asked for it.

e. Info Sys: Andrea S. and Maarten said that, because this is for community info (status report), maybe merge with the accounting session?

f. Monitoring: Alberto Aimar will chair the session. Experiments will present their experience from the new tools. They should be asked to try the new tools to prepare.

SUNDAY

1. HL-LHC: Ian said the talk should include demonstrators related to data management. There will be a presentation at the Sept. pre-GDB. Ian should give the presentation that contains the luminosity values that will show the expected data volumes.

2. Performance: Moved to Saturday.

3. HSF: Not our business to discuss what will be included in this session.

4. What about the the "Easy site" that was evangelised at the Lisbon workshop? Maarten said any progress so far was in the background, viz. in existing initiatives. In CHEP we will have a presentation summarizing the state of affairs. Afterwards we may want to select a few activities to be promoted.

5. Other items not yet in the agenda:

  1. CentOS7 will not be included unless the participants of the Sept 1st WLCG Ops Coord meeting decide to have a discussion at the Workshop in addition.
  2. Simone made a few suggestions in email on other topics to be included, e.g. "what is done concretely to kill SRM". Maybe discuss at the pre-GDB first and then decide if a summary can be presented at the workshop. Oliver also emailed some proposal as well about a discussion on future protocol choices. His proposed discussion on "disruptive changes" could be part of the HL-LHC session (i.e. longer-term vision).
  3. Ale said he wishes to see a slot on payload scheduling. Maarten said this topic is complex and should rather be announced as a planned pre-GDB (e.g. in Nov). Julia to talk to Ian Collier.

Julia will follow-up except for next week when both Ian B. and herself are on holiday.
