Description

The Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) technique is based on the fast release of the nuclear reaction products from the chosen target material, together with their ionization to produce Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs). Within this context, the Selective Production of Exotic Species (SPES) facility is now under construction at Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL-INFN). It will produce RIBs mainly from n-rich isotopes obtained by a 40 MeV cyclotron proton beam (200 μA) directly impinging a uranium carbide multi-foil fission target.

In the first part of the seminar, a general presentation of the SPES facility will be given, together with the description of the main R&D activities characterizing the SPES working units.

The second part of the seminar will be focused on the target – ion source system, that is the core of the entire facility. The SPES multifoil UCx target and the ion sources currently adopted will be presented, describing in detail the numerical models implemented for their study and development. Theoretical results will be compared with the related measurement sets performed at the SPES R&D laboratories. All the stable beams produced (that are preparatory for the future RIBs) and the high temperature endurance tests will be presented and discussed in detail.
