Description

An electromagnetics and plasma software suite (VSim) that is being used for AWAKE studies of plasma acceleration, dielectric accelerator-on-a-chip (ACHIP) calculations, by the ISOLDE group to optimize ion source designs, and by international collaborators to devise low secondary electron yield (SEY) materials to mitigate multipactor and electron cloud is presented. Differences between electromagnetic and electrostatic particle-in-cell (PIC) and talk about the applicable limitations that affect the time to solution are introduced.

Studies of plasma accelerators can be accelerated through high performance computing, Lorentz boosted frames, envelope models; envelope models that provide accuracy further into depletion are shown, and enablement of faster and more accurate computation is discussed. Recently developed dielectric algorithms which allow for better accuracy in simulations involving dielectrics are benchmarked, as are algorithms for computing energy loss inside the materials.

The interface between electromagnetics crosses to electrostatics with PIC, and fluid modelling is explored. Advantages of PIC methods such as accurate measurement of energy distribution functions and physically accurate interactions between plasma and materials are described, electron cloud measurement and mitigation studies are presented. These show how the physics, also relevant to ion sources, is captured, and offers hope for electron cloud suppression for PIP-II or the LHC.
