Maria Regina Naxxar middle school opened its doors to students in September 2013 following educational reform of colleges in Malta where all secondary schools were divided into middle and senior schools. Being a co-educational middle school, it caters for boys and girls of ages 10-13 residing in the northern region of Malta. The school has an ever-increasing diverse population of around 600 students. Multiculturalism is promoted in all activities and events since the students hail from many European countries as well as North African countries and Asia. The science department at the school includes nine teachers led by a head of department. Many activities such as science educational outings and science fairs are organised throughout the scholastic year to direct students towards STEM careers and to make them aware of the multitude of careers in science. The school is a feeder school to two senior schools and the science department is actively involved in science popularisation so that the maximum number of students who pursue their studies in STEM subjects can be reached.
