Description
This session, open to the non-expert public, introduces physical and clinical aspects of hadrontherapy, as an example on how basic investigation may produce applied results.
In contrast with conventional X-ray radiotherapy, where energy is continuously deposited before reaching the tumor, in hadrontherapy the majority of this energy is deposited in single point, thus avoiding damage in the surrounding healthy tissue. In the future, this will be the preferred technique for sensitive areas like the eyes or the marrow.
