MP3 meeting 19 May 2009

Matters arising

Jean Philippe Tock communicated that the ""task force"" took a decision to by pass both spool correctors of dipole 2444.

Markus Z. showed the new feature of the layout database which now displays the non conformities attached to the circuits.
Walter asked whether this means we are turning the layout DB in "as built".
Markus answered yes.
Gianluigi pointed out that we would like to keep track of the nominal machine.
Markus said that this is accomplished by keeping the previous versions of the DB.
Gianluigi remarked that this has the disadvantage of mixing layout changes with non conformities.
Mirko asked if MP3 was supposed to open non conformities during power tests
Nuria answered that it was foreseen.
Reiner reminded that several QPS thresholds had to be increased to cope with "unbalanced apertures" in dipoles, and said that this might be necessary as well in future. He requested that MP3 approves the new thresholds.
Rudiger summarized that the issue is twofold: the changes need to be 1) approved by the experts (MP3) and 2) documented .
Markus Z. said that this year there seems not to be the possibility to test the new sequences before the start of the commissioning campaign. This is worrying
Nuria observed that in case the cryogenics is not available we should be prepared to use the time to do this testing

MP3 mandate (Nuria)

Nuria showed the mandate, and a first simulation of CCC shifts, showing that the resources are roughly sufficient to man 2 shifts/day with 2 people/shift
On the mandate, Knud remarked that the old EEWG dealt with all electrical installations, whereas MP3's attributions stops somewhere in the middle of the power converter.

Powering procedure for the IT (Mirko)

Mirko showed the new test plan for the IT.
As for the main circuits, dedicated tests are added aiming at assessing the splice integrity.
The resolution of calorimetry tests in the IT is evaluated in 10 W, translating in significant resistances at the test currents
Nuria asked whether we have a QPS snapshot for the IT
Reiner answered no, due to the particular design of the detectors
Rob Wolf asked how the triplet protection was done
Reiner said that it features 3 detectors which cover the busbar, however, even though internally the detectors have a high resolution, the resolution of the digitized output is not sufficient for the snapshot. Also the detector cannot be triggered whithout loosing the protection
Nuria said that, as for the IPQs, the splices can be measured with the Keithleys
Walter observed that the value of IPNO on the plot shown by Mirko is still the one corresponding to 7 TeV
Mirko answered that it will be rescaled once the final decision on the energy will fall
Ruediger said that the same value should be taken for all triplets, out of simplicity
Gianluigi reminded that the same applies to the current ramp rates
The question of the usefulness of the calorimetry step was raised, especially at 3 kA
Walter stressed that in any case there must be a clear specification of the analysis to be performed including the tools to be used, and the acceptance criteria of the calorimetry step; adding that this applies as well to the QPS snapshots.
We must stick to having all test steps analysed and approved by somebody which is well defined and responsible of signing the step, this somebody must be given all the tools and knowledge to make the decision, at least in all situations that can be anticipated, and these two steps are examples of such situations.
Mirko stated that all the IT are considered to have been commissioned in 2008, as a consequence there will be no heater firing at high current
There was a discussion on the need to modify the ECR on the IT to upgrade the current ramp rates, it was agreed to wait until the achievable values are known.

AOB

Matteo asked the list of the dipoles to be quenched in sector 23
ACTION –> Arian will update the related "specificities" document.
Ruediger reminded that the powering procedures for the IPQs and IPDs are urgently needed
Gianluigi asked about the limitations on RQT13.L5. Is the limit of 200 A an hard one or can it be relaxed?
ACTION –> Mirko to investigate and report to the next meeting" document.
