We generalize the formalism of fragmentation functions to a broad class of jet observables that recursively probe the collective properties of hadrons produced in jet fragmentation. We discuss the nonlinear evolution of the corresponding generalized fragmentation functions and consider also observables sensitive to hierarchical clustering trees. Applications include quark/gluon discrimination and the calculation up to next-to-leading logarithmic order of the thrust distribution measured using only charged particles.
