Description

CMS is adding new GEM detectors to the Muon system as part of its high luminosity phase 2 upgrade program. GEM detectors are a relatively new form of micro pattern gaseous detector and a dedicated ASIC development was launched to provide the front-end readout. Following an approximate 15 man-year design phase involving a dedicated design team, the VFAT3 chip was completed.

VFAT3 is a complete binary “Trigger” and “Tracking” ASIC in that it can provide information in real time for trigger building and the readout of data packets following the receipt of a LV1A trigger. The analog part has programmable features which optimises its performance with GEM input charge characteristics. The chip has now been fabricated, characterized and produced ready for installation within CMS.

This talk presents the CMS phase 2 muon upgrade focusing on GEM detectors and then goes through the design and measured performance of the VFAT3 chip and its place within the full GEM electronics readout system.
