Travel to and around Basel:

Basel is a city of around 175,000 inhabitants in the north-western corner of Switzerland, where the Swiss, German and French borders meet. Basel can be most easily accessed either via airplane or train:

  • The EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg is located a few kilometers northwest of Basel and is well connected with other major European airports. To then get to the city, take bus line 50 in front of the Swiss/German part of the terminal.
  • The Basel SBB train station is located in the southern part of the city and is well connected to the railway systems of Switzerland, Germany and France.

Bus line number 50 connects the Euroairport to the SBB train station, passing through the city center, as well as within a few hundred meters of the Physics Building of the University of Basel. The route of bus line 50, as well as the conference location, are shown in red on the map below (click image to enlarge).

Basel has an efficient public transportation system, which integrates both the bus and tram system (click here for a detailed bus and tram map). The tickets can be bought at the green colored ticket machines located at every bus/tram station, but not on the buses/trams themselves. The "short journey" tickets for 4 stops or less cost 2.30 CHF, while the regular ticket costs 3.80 CHF (1 zone, any combination of buses and trams for a limited time). The ticket to and from the Euroairport is a 2 zone ticket costing 4.70 CHF. More information on ticket prices and offers can be found at the TNW website. A handy tool for determining the most efficient route between two stations, complete with departure times of buses/trams/trains, can be found on the SBB website under this link.

Since Basel is a quite small city, most locations in and around the center are likely to be within walking distance.
